Reflections on Ice-Breaking by Ogden Nash

Candy
Is dandy
But Liquor
Is quicker.

A fun and quick poem it will be posted in its entirety, because it is tricky to analyze any other way. In fact, more than a poem or prose, it is an adage.

Phrases, such as, "breaking the ice," have many meanings depending on the situation: asking someone on a date or making friends. Essentially, it is starting a new relationship. The relation I think of is the boss' candy bowl. This is a ploy to get employees to frequent their office and talk openly about happenings at work. In addition, most people agree large business deals happen at business dinners, conventions or bars; wherein, alcohol is served in moderation. Having a drink is said to, "Take the edge off."

Many artists observed the calming affect of alcohol, including, drinking a shot to steady the hands. When thinking about this factor, beyond the cozy feeling of eating or enjoying a beverage to relax, candy is associated to jitters and hyperactivity. Liquor is associated with fuzzy feelings, a pink nose and sleep. When attempting to understand another person preoccupying activities creates a bonding situation; however, sitting peacefully and talking about life is when relationships are formed. It is also when communication begins, so both parties become aware of new friend's attitudes, defenses and agendas.

Some may dislike the poem, believing it promotes alcohol dependency. Yet the overall interpretation is as relevant whether substituting hiking for candy and sitting atop a cliff for liquor. Fun, exciting activities are memorable moments. Calm, pleasant talks create friendships.
